  • Program Lead

    Program Lead

    TITLE: Program Lead

    REPORTS TO:  Director of Ministries

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The mission statement is to help people Encounter God, Enrich Relationships and Experience Creation.  The primary purpose of a Program Lead is to support the year-round Ministry Team in planning and executing summer camps.

Since this is a spiritual leadership role, the position requires a personal relationship with God.

This is a 4 month paid position

Although the Director of Ministries holds the responsibility of hiring/firing our staff, there is an operational level to which the Program Leads oversee and give direction to our summer team.  While the Director of Ministries leads overall vision/direction of our camps, the Program Leads provide ground level support in the delegation and execution of the programs.

Program Leads are the direct report for our Group Leads and Activity Staff, and it is their responsibility to effectively delegate and manage these two leadership teams.  They will play a role in training these teams, as well as dealing with staffing issues that may arise.  Program Leads are expected to provide weekly check-ins, prayer, and mentorship to all Group Leads and Activity staff.  We believe all our team should be mentored and mentoring. Program Leads mentor/support Group Leads and Activity staff, and will be mentored/supported by our Director of Ministries through weekly check-ins.

Program Leads are the first call in an emergency, dealing with issues such as camper incident reports, and disclosures.  The expectation is not that this responsibility falls solely on them, but it is done with the support of our year-round Ministry Team.

Program Leads set the tone for our summer staff. Therefore, part of their role, is creating a staffing environment that has clear communication, detailed forward planning, as well as a sense of encouragement and tangible staff supports.  Practical ways this is carried out is by use of our bulletin board, communication in meetings, and creative use of our staff room to provide encouragement and blessings for our team.

Program Leads help bring our programs to life!  Whether it be creating new games, theme meals, or TNL (talent show) skits, there is a creative ministry development side to this position.  Our desire at camp is for campers to have fun and be met with a sense of joy in the way we communicate and the overall culture we create.  In some ways this role is a fun event planner.

Some creative aspects in our program, which our Program Leads are tasked with, is Mayhem Games (wide games), Pophilarity Games (indoor games), Theme Meals, TNL (talent show), SNO (Seniors Night Out), and a support role in JNO (Juniors Night Out).  It is important to not only be creative in this, but also detail oriented.  All moving parts such as instructional videos for games need to be prepared, all materials purchased and ready to go, and the correct people delegated for set up and take down.

Program Leads are also tasked with creatively supporting our Cabin Leaders.  Whether that be making a giant set of Dutch Blitz cards for cabins to use or adding a stack of “would you rather” questions, and cabin devotion support tools to the cabin bins, the Program Leads seek to support our Cabin Leaders in whatever creative and tangible ways they can.

The Director of Ministries will organize camp speakers, and worship bands, but Program Leads will “MC” both our chapel and our campfire times.  Although they do not need to take the upfront role, they must make sure all the moving pieces such as who is starting the fire, who is running the sound system, etc. are organized and running smooth. The flow and professionalism of the program falls on the Program Leads.

Throughout our Spring/Summer season, we also additionally run four Family Camps.  For all four of our Family Camps, the Program Leads will prepare and run a Sunday School style program for the elementary.  They will additionally organize check-in/details for the toddler program and take either a supporting or lead role in our youth program.

With hundreds of children/youth on-site every week, there are many moving parts and administrative details that the Program Leads are responsible for.  Program Leads are tasked with making schedules for each camp week (Gr 1-3; Gr 4-6; Junior High; Senior High), activity schedules, staff cleaning/dishes schedules, and weekend schedules.  Not only do they have to be mindful of not creating scheduling conflicts between the two main site camps (which they oversee), they also need to coordinate scheduling with the Paintball Lead and Outdoor Lead, to make sure mealtimes and activity times work best for everyone.

Pre-summer, there is an administrative responsibility to not only organize program supplies, but also take inventory of what remaining summer supplies need to be purchased so that all materials and inventory are on-site, in time for summer.

Each week there are also administrative tasks such as beginning of the week cabin bins, end of week cabin bins, tuck bins, and the organization and sorting of camper letters, all of which needs to be executed by the Program Leads.

With our Program Leads having such a large leadership role in our summer camps, it is important that they are cross trained in as many areas as possible.  Our hope is, that if needed, they can provide activity support, cabin support, and hospitality support.

Every member of our team is meant to fulfill a specific role within the organization, and we want our staff to take the time & space to focus on the priorities of that role. However, the realities of camp operations require that each of us be willing to step outside of that specific role, when circumstances demand, to support the broader needs of the organization. Therefore, this job, like all others, requires a willingness to serve our guests and campers in practical ways (e.g., serving meals, doing dishes, facilitating activities, general housekeeping etc.).   In the months prior to summer (May and June), this will be a component of their day-to-day role at camp.

  • Group Lead

    Group Lead

    TITLE: Group Lead

    REPORTS TO:  Program Lead

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The mission statement is to help people Encounter God, Enrich Relationships and Experience Creation.  The primary purpose of a Group Lead is to support our Program Leads, in communicating with the cabins and being an accessible listening ear for our Senior Cabin Leaders.

Since this is a spiritual leadership role, the position requires a personal relationship with God.

This is a 4 month paid position

Each week you will be assigned a handful of cabins to be in your squad.  As Squad Leader, it is your responsibility to:

    • pass along information to your cabins, making sure they all know where to be and what to do throughout the day.  You will also serve as a “filter” for their questions for leadership, answering details around schedule etc. that come up, and informing the Program Leads when situations arise involving larger action steps and follow up.
    • mentor senior cabin leaders.  Although we understand the word “mentor” feels weighty, our goal is for all our staff to be discipled and play a role in discipling others.  Each week you will be responsible for arranging with the Senior Cabin Leaders in your squad, to have a one-on-one meeting with you.  The purpose of this meeting will be a check-in; a time where you ask them questions on how their week is going, what they need from you to thrive, and spending time praying for them.  Even though our camp is getting bigger, it is important to us that all staff feel they have a listening ear available to them, and someone who genuinely cares about their well-being and success.  Your role at Camp Nakamun helps facilitate this.
    • play a leading role in running the activity in which your squad is at.  Although you are not officially Activity Staff, and in multiple ways your job does vary from theirs, during the Activity blocks throughout the day, you will be helping with Activities.  For this reason, all Group Leads must be trained on all activities at Nakamun, and willing to step in and assist with them when needed.  You will remain with your squad during all Activity blocks, as your squad will always travel together from activity to activity throughout this time.

Although it will be your job to travel with your squad throughout the Activity blocks within the week, there are many other components that make up a week of camp (e.g., Popularity, Mayhem, etc.).  During these portions of the day, it is your responsibility to:

    • help the activity staff with the behind-the-scenes work.  With more people available to help during these times, we hope this will speed up things such as set up and take down times for games, and the overall flow of the large group aspects of camp.
    • “host” on your pre-assigned week(s).  All Group Leads will be given a chance to host at least one week in the summer.  When you are hosting, you will partner with the Program Lead to do tasks such as chapel and campfire announcements, and being in an upfront role during large group activities to give directions, etc.

The realities of camp operations require that each of us be willing to step outside of that specific role, when circumstances demand, to support the broader needs of the organization. Therefore, this job, like all others, requires a willingness to serve our guests and campers in practical ways (e.g., serving meals, doing dishes, facilitating activities, general housekeeping etc.).   In the months prior to summer (May and June), along with the family camps in July and August, this will be a component of your day-to-day role at camp.

The Outdoor team will be responsible for any program preparation required to run the outdoor camps off-site or on-site. Examples of this could be trail maintenance, group facilitation equipment maintenance or building, scouting trips, etc.
